RECAP: Last Stage of La Vuelta

La Vuelta Route

La Vuelta 2021 will start 14th of August in Burgos, Spain, with a short urban time trial (8 kilometres). La Vuelta come back to original number of stages and original month. 21 stages in august and September with 3.336 kilometres.

The Route will be very interesting with new mountain passes, two Individual Time Trial – ITT (first day in Burgos Cathedral and last day in the Santiago Cathedral, Galicia), great middle mountains stages and dangerous flat stages, some days crosswind can be decisive.

Stages you won’t want to miss at the 2021 Tour of Spain. Asturian roads become the judge of La Vuelta for another year. Gamoniteiro (14,9 km and 9.7% average slope), with a higher coefficient than Angliru. This mountain pass expected to go down in history.

In addition, there will be points in 45 climbs, including two big cols such as Alto de Velefique and the mythical climb to Covadonga Lakes (Lagos de Covadonga). The third stage finish in Picón Blanco  climb (8,4km at 9.7%), this day some leader could lost an important time to general classification.

There are some great cyclists who are ready at La Vuelta 2021. Top four riders of the Grand Tours are ready to this race: Primoz Roglic, Richard Carapaz and Egan Bernal. Finally, Pogaçar won’t be at La Vuelta from 14 august.

Spaniards Mikel Landa and Enric Mas will fight for the podium. The Spanish team Movistar has other big climber to win mountain stages, Miguel Ángel ‘Superman’ López. Promising cyclist Thomas Pidcock will ride the first Grand Tour.

Stage 01 - Sat. 14/08 | Burgos > Burgos Catedral (8 km) ***

La Vuelta 2021 will start with a prologue of 8 kilometers. Short differences in favourites riders are expected (10-25 seconds). Burgos is the place to start La Vuelta 21 with short urban time trial.

Stage 02 - Sun. 15/08 | Caleruega > Burgos. Gamonal (169.5 km) *

Second stage and first sprint finale. This Grand Tour has a lot of opportunities for sprinters.

Stage 03 - Mon. 16/08 | Santo Domingo de Silos > Picón Blanco (203 km) ****

Riders to fight of overall classification will need a good performance the first week. Picon Blanco, with slopes of up to 17% that may mark the first differences among the favourites.

The second great opportunity for sprinters in La Vuelta. The teams with sprinters will have to work hard. Stage 4 - Vuelta España 2021 - El Burgo de Osma Molina de Aragón
Stage 05 - Wed. 18/08 | Tarancón > Albacete (184.4 km) **
Other flat stage for sprinters. Crosswind could be dangerous for favourites riders. Stage 5 - Vuelta España 2021 - Tarancón Albacete
Stage 06 - Thu. 19/08 | Requena > Alto de la Montaña de Cullera (159 km) **

The finale located in Cullera Castle is a short uphill of 1.5 kilometers. Cyclists like Pogaçar, Carapaz and Roglic are favourites with this final profile.

Stage 07 - Fri. 20/08 | Gandía > Balcón de Alicante (152 km) ***

Mountain is coming. Six mountain passes, including two 1st category climbs, this is the firts true mountain stage.

Stage 08 - Sat. 21/08 | Santa Pola > La Manga del Mar Menor (163.3 km) **

Stage 09 - Sun. 22/08 | Puerto-Lumbreras > Alto de Velefique (187.8 km) ****

New final climb in La Vuelta España. Alto Velefique is the big test with 12.8 kilometers and 7.3% average slope.

Stage 11 - Wed. 25/08 | Antequera > Valdepeñas de Jaén (131.6 km) **

Typical steep climb in La Vuelta. The arrival will be very tough, with slopes of over 20% in the final kilometre.

Stage 12 - Thu. 26/08 | Jaén > Córdoba (166.7 km) *

Another popular finale in La Vuelta,  two climbs in the final part. Important day to get the right breakaway.

Stage 14 - Sat. 28/08 | Don Benito > Pico Villuercas (159.7 km) ***

Mountain stage ending at Pico Villuercas, long and stretched pass of 16.3km at 6.3%. It is not considered a stage to make big differences.

Stage 15 - Sun. 29/08 | Navalmoral de la Mata > El Barraco (193.4 km) ***

Very important stage before the second rest day. Saturday's mountain stage of La Vuelta. There are two first category climb, Alto de Mijares, it is the great pass to break the peloton.

Stage 17 - Wed. 01/09 | Unquera > Lagos de Covadonga (181.6 km) ****

Classic finale climb in Covadonga Lakes (Lagos de Covadonga). This year Covadonga Lakes looks really tough. Before, cyclists climb an unprecedented pass twice, Collada de Llomena, (almost 8 km long with slopes reaching an inclination of 14%).

Stage 18 - Thu. 02/09 | Salas > Altu d’El Gamoniteiru (159.2 km) *****

Queen stage (étape reine) of this edition. Gamoniteiro is a awesome new climb in La Vuelta. It is located very close to the Angliru. Gamoniteiro is 14,6kilometre-long climb at 9,8%. Cordal Pass ( translated as tailpiece) is dramatic if its raining, due to the slippery pavement of Asturian roads.
